Job Hunting tips
Job Search Is a Sales Process
When you stop begging for a job and start solving a problem, everything about your search changes.
From the very first session, I introduce one foundational principle in our coaching: job searching is a sales process. When you see your search through this lens, everything shifts.
Let’s break down what a true sale is. There’s a client with a challenge — a real pain point. You have a solution that makes that pain disappear. You understand their struggle, you’re confident in your value, and you enter a negotiation: your solution for their investment. That’s a sale.
Sounds simple when it’s furniture or software. But selling your own skills and expertise? That’s where most people freeze. Suddenly there’s discomfort, doubt, maybe even resistance. It feels unnatural. But it fits — and here’s why.
The company is your client
In a job search, your client isn’t just the company as a logo. It’s the people behind it: the recruiter, the hiring manager, the department head — those who will review your story and decide. Too often, candidates focus on their own pain: their need for a job, their urgency. That puts you in a weak, apologetic position.
But here’s the truth: an open position is always a problem for the company. Work is delayed or falling through cracks. Teams are stretched, managers are stressed, recruiters feel the heat to fill the gap — fast, and on budget. When you start to see yourself as the solution to that chaos, everything changes.
You already have the product
If you’re applying, you already bring value. Your education, experience, and skills are your product. You know what needs to be done, you get the industry, and you see where things could improve. Every step — your CV, cover letter, LinkedIn, interview, test task — is a chance to show: I’m exactly who you need.
A job offer? That’s the handshake at the end of a successful negotiation.
The takeaway
Treat your search as a sales process, with client-orientation at the core. Know what you offer and why it matters to them. That’s the transformation we work on together in coaching. Ready to turn job searching from pain to possibility?
